HERE IS THE OFFICIAL ANNOUNCEMENT FROM UHSAA (UTAH HIGH SCHOOL ACTIVITIES ASSOCIATION):

Executive Committee Meeting (3/11/09)

SUMMARY OF UHSAA KICK SURVEY RESULTS
Because of the overwhelming support that kick received from the participating 5A schools, all 1A, 2A, 3A, 4A participating schools were also surveyed to see if they would be willing to pilot kick next year in replace of novelty. Coaches recognized the savings this could
provide during these tough economic times.

100% of all participating 1A-5A schools completed the survey:

EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE APPROVED KICK PILOT FOR 2009-2010 FOR 1A-5A SCHOOLS
On March 11, 2009 the UHSAA Executive Committee approved a one-year KICK PILOT
for all classifications for the 2009-2010 school year in replace of novelty. At the 2010 State Drill Competition all 1A, 2A, 3A, 4A and 5A schools will compete in military, dance and kick.
Over 80% of drill team coaches voted to support KICK for next year with the understanding
that next spring the UHSAA will work with the UDDA Coaches Association in developing a
3-4 year plan regarding the competitive categories and present it to the Executive Committee
for final approval. The “yes” votes reflect an interest by coaches to support the kick pilot and
not necessarily a vote to eliminate prop or novelty at this time.

COMMENTS FROM COACHES
Kick was fun, less stressful and was much more cost effective.
Kick is more about dance then novelty is and drill is a dance competition, not a broadway production
Kick cut down on costs and was more enjoyable and less stressful for coaches and athletes.
Competitions ran quickly, more efficient, less penalties, less expensive, less hassle.
Kick is based more on skill not on the “wow” factor of expensive props.
It was a breath of fresh air to not have to deal with prop equipment.
Great not to worry about damage to the gym floor and not have to store props all year long.
Kick was an amazing and fun dance that helped to increase the technical ability. Save money.
Greatest concern with the kick routine: injuries that occur; requires more conditioning.
